JEWELRY CARE

Gold-Filled

Gold-filled contains 5% of solid gold and is made through a pressure and heat bonding process. This means that a thick layer of solid gold is bonded onto the base layer, usually sterling silver or brass, to form a thick and durable layer of solid gold. Making it much more valuable than any gold-plated, gold-dipped, or gold-coated product. Gold-filled jewelry does not flake off, rub off or turn colors.

Gold-filled is the most suitable material for sensitive skin as it is both tarnish-proof and hypoallergenic

Care Tips:

Gold-filled can be worn in water and can withstand all of your beauty/body products including but not limited to lotion, SPF, perfume, and makeup. To maintain shine, you can wash off any dirt, sweat, or chemical residue with lukewarm water, mild soap (dish soap works well), and a soft bristle brush. Make sure you pat dry with a soft cloth. You can also use our Handmade by Vluvv polishing cloth when you are traveling or on the go.

Rose Gold-Filled

Rose gold-filled is just like gold-filled, except a bit of copper is added to the alloy to give it its classic rosy tone. Rose gold- filled is a tarnish proof material, however, it is not hypoallergenic. If you're sensitive to copper, rose gold may not be right for you.

Solid Gold

In its most pure form (24k) gold is soft and too weak to work with. Because of this, alloys are added to strengthen it, and also known as “solid gold”. Solid gold is a suitable material for sensitive skin as it is both tarnish-proof and  hypoallergenic

Care Tips:

Sterling Silver

Sterling silver consists of 92.5% pure silver with the remaining metal most likely being copper in order to strengthen the silver. Sterling silver is considered a precious metal. Sterling silver tarnishes due to a natural chemical reaction that occurs when silver is exposed to air. Therefore it will require additional care to maintain it nice and polished. Sterling silver is a suitable material for sensitive skin and is hypoallergenic

Care Tips:

If your silver is very tarnished and requires more of a deep cleaning, watch this tutorial for a step by step on getting rid of the tarnish and restoring shine. Once your silver is clean follow these steps to maintain it from getting tarnished longer.

  1. Store in a sealed pouch (you can re-use all of our Handmade by Vluvv, holographic pouches to store your silver).

  2. We provide one anti-tarnish tab with every purchase of a Handmade by Vluvv Sterling Silver piece. Make sure you do not throw this away and you keep it sealed in the holographic pouch along with your jewelry piece. This will prolong your cleanings and keep your silver tarnish-free for longer periods of time.

  3. Try not to leave out your sterling silver in open trays or jewelry boxes.

Gold Plated

Its gold content is usually less than 1%. This means that the piece has a base metal that is often brass or silver and is dipped in a gold bath (usually 18k or 14k). While gold-plated pieces may possess the same luster and gold appearance as solid gold or gold filled jewelry, this layer may eventually chip, fade, flake, or rub off if not taken care of properly.  Can be hypoallergenic until the gold plating wears off to expose the base metal, wear with caution.

Care Tips:

Even Though you can get gold plated jewelry wet we recommend that you avoid doing so often. Also, make sure that you limit wearing your jewelry in pools, jacuzzis and saunas as this may shorten the life-span of your jewelry. If you get any cosmetics or chemicals on your gold-plated jewelry make sure that you rinse and pat them dry.
